My son is turning 5. I thought it would be a good idea to write down his interests and gift ideas while it’s still fresh in my mind and provide a gift guide for 5 year old boy.
Books on CD
My 5 year old son loves listening to stories on CD. Mostly ones from movies he’s seen. He still enjoys hearing them even though he’s seen the movie.
Building
Mega blocks are great! Even my 10 yo still plays with them. I only wish we would have gotten this scoop/pickup bucket when we first got one. All my kids love it. Get some extra blocks too if you have the room, hours of fun!
All my kids love these Magna-tiles. They can spend hours building towers, houses and whole towns.
Character toys
Cars, characters or play houses in any of the following
Other ideas, Power Rangers, Skylanders, Or whatever characters they are into. Trains, Planes and Automobiles. My 5 year old still loves trains. His older brother lost interest around 3 – 4 years old, but my youngest still loves them at this age. However, he’s starting to prefer motorized trains and tracks.

Good old fashioned cash. If you ask most parents, they say “they don’t NEED anything”, but the fun of being a kid was to get presents on your birthday. If you’re still not sure, just have fun with it, they will love whatever you get! Check out my guide for my older son ‘Gifts for 9 year old boy‘.
Skylander Cake
Trae wanted a Skylander cake. I am no cake maker, so don’t judge too harshly! It was pretty easy.
- 2 round chocolate cakes
- 1 round white cake
- Pepperidge Farm Pirouette Chocolate Hazelnut Créme Filled Wafers
I just used the chocolate icing as “glue” and my son placed the figurines (from the game) randomly. It turned out better than I thought it would.
